Types of Experinces

We align with Dr. Stan Grof's cartography of the psyche. Dr. Grof being one of the foremost researchers in expanded states of consciousness.

Most experiences that participants report fall into the categories noted below.

Each time you do breathwork, it will be a completely different experience. There is no linear sequence of breathwork experiences. There are no right or wrong, better or worse experience.

Sensory Experiences

While a vast array of experiences are possible here are some common sensory experiences.

  • Visual experiences of color, light, fractals

  • Extremes of hot and cold

  • Body feeling numb, tingling, movement of energy

  • Tetany; intense numbness, stiffness in any part of the body but quite often occurs in the hands and toes. Your hands might look like claws with your fingers completely stiffened.  “Typically tension reaches a peak and is followed by deep relaxation. This represents a release of blocked physical & emotional energies. This makes it possible for represented content of related memories to emerge to consciousness and be integrated. This type of muscular tension tends to decrease with the number of breathwork sessions.” (Grof 2019)

  • The recommendation if you get tetany is to let it be as tense as it wants to be in order to reach a climax and release.  However if the tetany gets too much you can always slow down the breathing and the tetany will subside in a short period of time.
